Building, validating and donating to citizens variety of air quality sensors in order to accurately measure air pollution and feed our open data, open source inclusive platform Green Machine.
Our main focus is building a network of air quality sensors in Sarajevo to accurately measure air pollution and provide data-driven evidence for improving quality of life for everyone. We want to manufacture and donate to citizens a variety of sensors and stations all localized manifactured, tested and calibrated. With the help of partners from Green Machine we plan to validate the sensors' accuracy and produce the level of certainty for the data sensors produced. Our idea is to unleash the power of citizens, environmental activists, media and healthcare professionals to successfully advocate for change
Green machine is all about promoting citizens' adoption and maintenance of devices, so the citizens can have the opportunity to participate, with sensors we provided or with their own solutions. We hope to achieve a significant number of citizens, CSOs and public institutions that have incorporated air pollution measurement as part of their regular life or work through: regular measurement and publication of air pollution data, ownership and maintenance of air pollution measurement devices, and easy access, training, and support in purchasing, owning or building air pollution measurement devices.
In addition, we want to develop all-inclusive, open source, open data platform collecting air quality data per hour, to collect data from all available sources, from our network of adopted sensors with different pollutants and from future sources that are under development in testing Old Town municipality area. Data will be collected from open data resources by web scraping and from IoT ready devices. Open source software and resources will be used for data processing, data presentation and visualization. All current and historical data on our platform will feed our own application but will be offered to everyone else to do their own applications, public displays, cross-reference analysis, and will be fed to global openaq.org. For example, cross-referencing our historical data with historical atmospheric data and industry intensity will enable creation of predictive algorithms, so important for life planning for the citizens who belong to vulnerable groups.
On the platform we will include instructions on how to create a low cost measurement station or IoT based on Arduino and Raspberry Pi, which can be created by individuals or as a school science project, or how and where to get some of the readymade solutions like Air Quality Egg and similar and how to register those devices with us and get the geotag on a map.
In creating relevant and evidence-based information we want to create mash up data with: -Government data (data from stations measuring: PM10, ozone (O3), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO)) -Sensors developed and tested through cooperation with Systech company, will measure PM2.5, PM10, ozone (O3) and carbon monoxide (CO) with great reliability, confirmed by the parallel work with professional equipment. They will also measure sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) -Homebrewe sensors (such as PM, CO, NO2, UV light, air pressure, humidity, and temperature) such as CPI modular air quality station Pi with the ability to measure all pollutants required to calculate an AQI.
Clean environment and health protection is a human right and it is a government responsibility. Green Machine pollution data will help decision-makers to determine the main causes of pollution and to take appropriate measures, interventions, regulations. Investment in air protection technology, filters, different fuels, will increase economic activity for the providers of such technology and services. Better air quality is contributing to the better health of the citizens and less sick leaves. It is good for tourists who visit Sarajevo in the polluted parts of the year. Sensor, platform and data advocacy that we are developing under the name Green Machine is easy to scale up and much needed in other parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region and can become and export product/service.
The Green Machine Team is made up of environmental experts, engineers, innovators and citizens who are volunteering for years on developing solutions for combating air pollution in Sarajevo.
